The Kanchanaburi Province in Thailand always proves to be a hidden treasure for families. Due to the wholesome activities offered there, I enjoy recommending the region to visitors. The end of November proves an especially exciting time to visit due to River Kwai Bridge Week.
History comes alive for visiting families in Kanchanaburi. Visitors can travel to the region from Bangkok in exceptionally restored vintage trains or colonial-style river boats. Activities for all ages include hiking to ancient ruins or traveling through the Kanchanaburi Safari Park. RIVER KWAI BRIDGE WEEK
24 November - 7 December, 2007
For one week this November to early December, the famous River Kwai Bridge will illuminate in the night sky during a light and sound show in remembrance of its construction during World War II. The Bridge is recognized internationally, being the subject of several motion pictures and books. Events during the River Kwai Bridge Week include numerous cultural performances, rare vintage trains and rail cars, and a remembrance ceremony to pay respect to those who gallantly lost their lives at the bridge.
The city of Kanchanaburi sits only 130 kilometers from Bangkok and the trip proves one of scenic beauty. En route visitors can find waterfalls, Neolithic caves, national parks and quiet riverside settings. Special trains run from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station during the period of the Bridge Festival and a vintage steam train excursion usually runs on the last day of the festival. You must book early as this is an immensely popular event.
