There’s an art to drinking fine tequila – and the “Tequileros” at Las Ventanas al Paraíso, A Rosewood Resort in Los Cabos, Mexico, take their lessons seriously. Any student who can’t answer the final test question (What are the very best tequilas made from? Answer: 100% Blue Agave) doesn’t receive a diploma. (Tip: Tequileros have been known to offer diplomas to students who can answer an extra-credit question.)
Every Tuesday and Friday, guests gather at the Five Diamond resort's new Tequila Bar to learn the differences between Blanco (aged up to 60 days), Reposado (aged up to 12 months) and Anejo (aged a minimum of 13 months). The classes are taught by specially trained Tequileros – who travel to Jalisco to study the age-old art of tequila making. They teach the history of tequila, classifications, the distillation process and the appropriate way to drink the country’s classic liquor.
There’s no sipping tequila on an empty stomach, either. Classes include the requisite guacamole with tortilla chips, Mexican cheeses, and ceviches – as well as two specially made Sangritas that complement the tequila.
Las Ventanas’s Tequila Bar serves an array of fresh ceviches during the day. In the evening, it transforms into a Tequila & Sushi Bar - featuring a selection of fresh fish from the Sea of Cortez with imaginative Mexican touches and flavorings, like chipotle dipping sauces and sushi wrapped in Hoja Santa ("holy leaf" herb) instead of seaweed.
Tequila classes are held every Tuesday and Friday at 5 p.m. Cost is $75 per person plus tax and gratuity.
