NOBEL PEACE CENTER TO FEATURE FROM KING TO OBAMA

08-25-2009

-- Exhibit Showcases American Civil Rights Movement --

NEW YORK, August 25, 2009 – Innovation Norway, a governmental entity that promotes Norwegian industry and Norway as a tourist destination, announced today that the Nobel Peace Center in Oslo, Norway, will open a new exhibit entitled From King to Obama on September 25, 2009.  The exhibit portrays the American Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s – the effort that paved the way for Barack Obama’s historic election.  From King to Obama will run until April 11, 2010

"There are many obvious similarities between King and Obama in terms of their values, their political strategies and in their rhetoric and public impact.  It has been inspiring and fascinating to create an exhibition of contemporary relevance that is based on these major historic events," said Bente Erichsen, director of the Nobel Peace Center.

“We are excited to invite visitors to the Nobel Peace Center to experience a new exhibit that pays tribute to two important and inspirational figures,” commented Kristin Dahle, Regional Director – Americas, Innovation Norway.  “We hope the exhibit will attract Americans and visitors throughout the world who want to better understand how the American civil rights movement influenced global peace efforts.”

The Norwegian Nobel Committee awarded Martin Luther King, Jr. with the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.  The Civil Rights Movement’s slogan: "Thou shall not requite violence with violence", was a central factor cited in the justification for the Norwegian Nobel Committee’s decision.

The From King to Obama exhibit features historic photographs, film, texts and sound recordings.  Music from the 1960’s helps immerse visitors in the time period.

The Nobel Peace Center has developed the From King to Obama exhibit in collaboration with Magnum Photos.  The exhibit is supported by The Freedom of Expression Foundation, Oslo.  The Nobel Peace Center is open daily, with guided tours in English at 11 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. during the summer season (ending August 31).  Tours in English during the winter season need to be pre-booked.  Hours of operation in the winter are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m.  SAS Scandinavian Airlines offer flights from select U.S. cities to Oslo.

Borton Overseas is featuring an exclusive travel package for individuals or groups interested in travelling to Oslo to experience the From King to Obama exhibit.  The package includes air, hotel, entrance to the Nobel Peace Center, and more.  For details, visit www.bortonoverseas.com.
