LOG CABIN DAYS

09-08-2009

September 18 & 19, 2009, Hochstetler Milling, 552 St. Rt. 95,

Loudonville, OH 44842

Hochstetler Milling will again be hosting Log Cabin Days, with proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society and the Mohican Area Parochial School.  This annual event will be held on September 18 and 19, 2009 with the main activities being at Hochstetler Milling and several central Ohio area log homes that will be available for the auto tour.

If you are dreaming of a log home, already own a log home, or just interested in more basic things of life – then Log Cabin Days are for you.

The highlight of Log Cabin Days is the log home self-guided auto tour benefiting the American Cancer Society. Thanks to a few selected log home owners agreeing to open up their log home for this two day special event. You have the rare opportunity to see the inside of their private log homes. We will be taking a suggested donation of $10 per couple or $15 per vehicle benefiting the American Cancer Society.  Last year the log home tour raised over $2,000 for this charity. If you want to see all of the log homes on the tour, plan on most of one day for it.

We are very excited about our line-up of good speakers to lead our free workshops. New this year is our workshop on designing your dream log home by Hochstetler Milling’s Jim Kanagy. This promises to be very interesting, as well as beneficial workshop to the folks starting on the road to successfully designing their own dream log home.

Jennifer Reed of Farm Credit will be talking about financing your log home. These days you can’t get too much of that.  Very helpful is her explanation of how to come up with a workable budget for your log home.

Again this year, Ray Kovitz of Sikkens will be talking to us about log home maintenance.  This has proven to be a very popular workshop to both current log homeowners as well as future homeowners.

Bill Dinkins of Hochstetler Milling will be presenting “Log Basics 101”, which is helpful in selecting log sizes, wood species, and profile types for your dream home.

There will be various exhibitors showing off their wares, including interior and exterior wood finishes, cabinetry, solid oak furniture, log home furniture, rustic western type furniture, bent hickory rockers, windows, and both interior and exterior doors. Gerber Lumber will be on hand to do free material take-offs on your blueprints for the additional material needed to our package to finish your project.  Local and national log builders and log stackers will be on hand to answer all your construction questions, along with banks that specialize in log home lending to take care of all of the financial questions you may have.

Watch a log home building crew build an actual log cabin from start to finish.  This 13’x 24’ cabin with an 8’ porch on the end is on skids and sized to be shipped on the road.  It will be for sale at a discount and would make an excellent guest or hunting and fishing cabin.  If interested contact Hochstetler Milling, we can even customize it for you.

There will be demonstrations for hand hewing and hand pealing logs, portable band sawing, and chainsaw carving.  Lumberjacks will be competing with ax throwing, crosscut sawing, and ax chopping.

You can tour the mill at your leisure, and watch log home logs being milled.  The mill is scheduled to be in operation both Friday and Saturday.  You will be able to step inside one of our dry kilns and see first hand how the kiln works to dry lumber.

There will be plenty of fun activities.  Watch amateurs and not-so-amateurs compete in a log stacking contest for the prize.  Better yet, compete yourself.  Take an authentic Amish buggy ride, or educate yourself with forestry information and sign up for a free bundle of white Pine seedlings.  Also, don’t forget to register to win a free prize.

The highlight for this year’s silent auction is a beautiful log cabin star quilt, hand stitched by Amish women.  You can also bid on other handcrafted log cabin related items such as half log benches, clocks, and furniture.

Enjoy homemade ice cream, delicious kettle cooked popcorn, fresh pressed  apple cider made in an antique cider press, apple butter being stirred, an Amish bake sale, and lunch stand featuring a log cabin burger.

Proceeds from the sale of refreshments, bake sale and silent auction will benefit the Mohican Parochial School and the American Cancer Society.

Last but not least, both of the Hochstetler Milling model homes, the “McKay” and the “Black Fork” models will be available for tours as well.

Our goal is to make Log Cabin Days an enjoyable two-day event that is educational and beneficial for the whole family.

Don’t miss it – we’ll see you there!                       &
