Sept. 28, 2009, Kansas … Hunting trips in Kansas don’t necessarily mean roughing it. There are plenty of camping options available at Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks (KDWP) sites across the state, including 73 cabins across 16 state parks and four state fishing lakes or wildlife areas. Mike Hayden, KDWP secretary commented, “The cabins are located near many great hunting properties, and the vast majority of cabins are available for both the fall and spring hunting seasons."
Cabins vary in amenities from rustic to fully-furnished with electricity, water, and heating and air conditioning. Some cabins are also ADA accessible. Rental prices vary with the amenities and capacity of the cabin. According to Mark Stock, KDWP cabin program coordinator, “There should! be something for every preference, but cabin patrons should certainly check out each cabin's amenities online, since they do vary. Some hunters will like the lower cost options that come with fewer conveniences; others will enjoy the modern comforts of home at very affordable costs. Some cabins even have dog kennels available.”
The cabins are popular with more than just hunters. Rob Riggin, Mined Land Wildlife Area (MLWA) manager, noted the cabin at MLWA is popular with everyone, including fall and spring hunters, anglers, and those just wanting to enjoy the scenic setting. One group of archery deer hunters last November liked the cabin so well that they reserved it for the same week this year. The MLWA also offers outstanding year-round fishing.
All cabin information can be accessed at the online reservation site at: https://reserve.ksoutdoors.com/Reservations/Complete-Cabin-List.
“With pheasant season just around the corner, locations such as Glen Elder State Park, Ottaw! a State Fishing Lake, Prairie Dog State Park, Webster State Park, and Wilson State Park are near great hunting areas, and pheasant hunting promises to be fantastic this year,” commented Stock.
Hunters visiting Kansas for any of the great fall, winter, or spring hunting opportunities, are encouraged to check out the KDWP cabins. They’re an affordable and comfortable way to stay close to the action.
