CAMBRIDGE, OH (October 5, 2009) – Vacations with a purpose are gaining more interest every year, and the Cambridge/Guernsey County Visitors & Convention Bureau is working to connect its local resources and attractions with incoming visitors this holiday season.
“Okay ladies, here is your opportunity to take a break with your sister, mom, daughter, and/or girlfriends before the hectic holiday season begins…and do we have just the right getaway in mind!,” says Cambridge/Guernsey County Visitor & Convention Bureau Executive Director Debbie Robinson. “Spend a weekend (November 7-8, 2009) in Cambridge, Ohio when our quaint historic downtown is charmingly transformed into a Dickens Victorian Village. Enjoy all of your favorite things - holiday shopping, eating, and exploring - all at your leisure!”
“People are traveling and are interested in helping others. Vacations with a purpose combine both and allows people to contribute to a community or cause to better someone else’s life,” continued Robinson. “This year the VCB wanted to provide just such an opportunity within our immediate community.”
Working with Southeastern Ohio Regional Medical Center (Southeastern Med), together the two organizations have created multiple “Think Pink” getaway packages in Guernsey County. A portion of each package sold is donated to Southeastern Med’s Pink Link Pass, a program for underinsured or uninsured women so that they may receive a free mammogram.
“While our visitors are relaxing on a perfect getaway in Southeastern Ohio, they can rejoice because they may be saving the lives of women,” Robinson said.
Funding for the free mammogram program is derived from Think Pink: Getaways with a Purpose sold to women from throughout Ohio and its feeder markets. The Colgate-Palmolive Company Facility in Cambridge, Ohio will match the funds raised for the Pink Link Program up to $500 in 2009.
Four Think Pink packages are being created. The first took place on August 8, 2009 with the Salt Fork Arts & Crafts Festival. The second will take place during the Dickens Victorian Village celebration November 7-8, 2009.
The November Think Pink package includes shopping through historic downtown Cambridge shops, high tea and scones at My SweetTea Pie Tea Boutique, and afternoon activities including a visit to Southeastern Med for the Wonderland of Trees, horse-drawn carriage rides and a visit to the National Museum of Cambridge Glass where participants will enjoy a tour of over 6,000 pieces of Cambridge Glass and take part in hands-on experiences.
Participants will also step back in time and enjoy dinner and a candlelight tour of 9,000-sq. ft. 1878 Victorian Colonel Taylor Bed & Breakfast mansion. After dinner, a special Think Pink Preview of the Guernsey County Courthouse will take place with a spectacular active display of lights on the downtown landmark that is synchronized to holiday music.
Sunday morning activities include a ride aboard the Byesville Scenic Railway for “A Coal Miner’s Christmas.” Learn how coal miners and their families celebrated the holiday season through a dramatic presentation performed while riding a vintage train in the Appalachian foothills. Following the train ride, finish that last bit of shopping during the Merchant’s Holiday open house in Downtown Cambridge.
Overnight accommodations are available through the Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn, and Salt Fork State Park Lodge. Cost of each Dickens Victorian Village Think Packages start at $106 and may be ordered at www.VisitGuernseyCounty.com under Vacation Packages.
