Oberammergau Passion Play

12-08-2009

Cruise West Offers Exclusive Land Tour

December 8, 2009) – Cruise West (www.cruisewest.com), the world’s leading provider of small-ship explorations to the most fascinating destinations on earth, has secured tickets to the exclusive Oberammergau Passion Play.  The renowned play was first performed in 1634 and for the past four centuries the tradition has continued every ten years.  Guests booking the line’s new 11-night Danube, Main & Rhine Rivers cruise have the option to add-on the three-night Munich & Oberammergau Land Tour that includes the 2010 Passion Play.

The villagers of Oberammergau in the early 1600’s created the five-hour Passion Play after surviving war, poverty and plague.  What makes the reenactment of the life, death and resurrection of Christ unique is that the talent – close to 2,000 performers – are all local laymen.  The play is performed on an open-air stage and includes dinner during the three-hour intermission.

The pre-cruise Land Tour may be booked in conjunction with Cruise West’s new Danube, Main and Rhine Rivers cruise, traveling from Vienna to Cologne on the elegant 148-guest Amadeus Diamond.  Departing October 2, 2010, guests will sail into Regensburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site resplendent with over 1,200 historic buildings; through the beautiful Altmühl Valley to Nuremberg, the capital of Franconia and historically the unofficial capital of the Holy Roman Empire; and along the River Rhine to Rüdesheim, a charming old wine town nestled in the upper middle Rhine Valley area.

Among the excursion highlights are a visit to a 900-year-old Benedictine Melk abbey; a full day in Salzburg, a UNESCO World Heritage Site; a wine sampling at Dürnstein, the most famous wine-growing town in Austria’s Wachau Valley; a full day in the historic city of Nuremberg; and an exquisite meal at the Michelin-starred Stromburg gourmet restaurant.

Cruise rates start at $4,999 per person, double occupancy.  Book and pay in full by February 19, 2010, and save up to $400 per cabin.  Add-on the three-night Munich & Oberammergau land tour for $3,199 per person, based on double occupancy.
