If Ever I Cease to Love

New Orleans Mardi Gras Traditions Cross Over Valentine’s Celebrations

A Pair of Specials- 2 People, 2 nights for $500, plus 1 extra night=3 Wonderful Evenings

January 6-February 11, 2010

Every year from January 6, or Twelfth Night as it is called, through Mardi Gras some five weeks later, the New Orleans air rebounds with improbable lyrics like “May fish get legs / and cows lay eggs / if ever I cease to love” – for the song of that name, “If Ever I Cease to Love,” from the popular 1870s burlesque show Blue Beard, has been the anthem of the prestigious Rex Organization from its first parade in 1872.  Largely forgotten outside the City That Care Forgot, it is beloved by the natives, most of whom have learned the words by heart as babies.

The song, nonsensical though it seems, does link two of the chief characteristics of New Orleans itself:  Romance and Mardi Gras revelry.  And as it sometimes does, this year Valentine’s Day falls within ‘the season,’ too, adding another layer of love and celebration.

At the Soniat House, in the heart of the French Quarter, and possibly the most romantic spot on Earth, a flag emblazoned with the legend “If Ever I Cease to Love” flies high and proud through the Mardi Gras season.  The handsome Creole townhouses that comprise this fine boutique hotel predate the song by several decades, and a sense of history infuses its secluded courtyards and antique-filled interiors.  It’s not hard to imagine the Soniat House occupied by its original owners, the graceful belles and debonair gentlemen of the Soniat Dufossat family -- whose conversations may well have been sprinkled with such flowery phrases.

However you choose to express your own love, during the 2010 Mardi Gras season, the Soniat House is presenting a remarkable offer on its highly romantic accommodations:  two people for two nights is not enough, so we have given a third night on the house. [January 6-February 11, 2010; pay two nights and get third night free; based on availability; Mardi Gras and Valentine’s weekend excluded]. $225 per night, per room [tax and gratuity not included]. Guests receive a complimentary passes to a nearby athletic club.

For reservations, please call the Soniat House- 800.544.8808.

All you need is love…!
