President's Notes

It’s hard to believe that we are wrapping up 2007, one of the most momentous years in Virginia tourism history. Virginia enjoyed the international spotlight of the 400th Anniversary of Jamestown and the historic visit from Queen Elizabeth, II. 2007 brought Virginia millions of dollars in international publicity and new appreciation as a historically significant destination.

While 2008 holds uncertainty with consumer confidence and gas prices looming, I remain optimistic about our travel market share. I do so for three reasons:
  1. Consumers need to travel to reconnect with family and friends and they continue to seek rewarding experiences for getaway weekends.
  2. The new resolve at VTC to accomplish "more with less." VTC staff has been tremendous in meeting the challenges of reorganization and budget cuts. The commitment to exceptional marketing, tourism development and workforce readiness has never been stronger.
  3. The support of the Virginia tourism industry. The professional attitude of the industry to make our state stronger through tourism is remarkable.
With all of that in mind, I thank each and every one of you for your commitment, your good advice and your sincere friendship. Please enjoy a fruitful and peace-filled holiday.

Here are some guidelines for adding your packages to Virginia.org. A package is typically one price with a number of components. A package must include at least one overnight stay. It may include any combination of components, including lodging, sightseeing, attractions, entertainment, meals, car rental, and transportation by air, motorcoach, rail, cruise vessel, rental or private car. See the Administration Tool Manual for more guidelines and requirements.

Don't forget to list your packages, specials, events and itineraries for romantic getaways on Virginia.org ASAP. Romance and Valentine’s is a major promotional opportunity for Virginia and VTC has already received media inquiries about romantic getaways and packages. Check Virginia.org for examples of current packages.

Hot Trend in Tourism
According to the Travel Industry Association (TIA), one-fifth of U.S. leisure travelers now choose their destination based on its food and drink. Some 27 million U.S. travelers within the past three years engaged in culinary and wine-related activities—beyond daily eating out—while on vacation. Read more here.
