Asia Travel Company Offers Cultural Immersion in Mongolia
BOULDER, CO, March 2010—Mongolia has changed little since the days of Genghis Khan, and that is why it is so alluring, says Marilyn Downing Staff, President of Asia Transpacific Journeys. Home to one of the world’s last remaining nomadic cultures, Mongolia is remote and vast, and seems to belong to a different era.
“On our Small Group Trip, Mongolia—In The Path of the Nomad our travelers glimpse how the locals live through hands-on experiences,” says Downing Staff. “It’s almost like time travel,” she adds. The journey features:
• Camel riding in the Gobi Desert
• Traditional Mongolian feasts with locals
• Lodging in a comfortable, furnished ger, the traditional yurt of the nomad
• Archery, wrestling and horse racing at the Nadaam Festival
• Conversations with reindeer herders in the forested north
• Experiencing authentic song and folk dance performances
• Tour leadership by a scholar of Inner Asian Studies
The trips are planned around the annual Nadaam Festival in Ulannbaatar where men, women and children compete in horse racing, wrestling, archery and other ancient arts their ancestors plied while plundering and pillaging their way through Europe and Asia.
The 14-day journey departs July 2 both in 2010 and 2011. Land cost is $6,995 per person, and internal air is $720. Cost includes most meals, medical and evacuation insurance and more. A custom journey to Mongolia can also be arranged on a private basis around a traveler’s dates for just friends or family.
