Richmond: Neighborhoods, Parks and Historic Homes

By Rich Steck

Lots of activity in Richmond, Virginia, and I don't mean the kind of flurry created in Patricia Cornwell's 15 novels featuring Dr. Kay Scarpetta as the state's Chief Medical Examiner.

I'm talking about a bustling neighborhood, some moving memorials and shopping options with historic connections.

The neighborhoods of Richmond Region's North Side offer a nice mix of architectural styles, including Queen Anne, American Four Square and Bungalow, as well as parks, gardens and retail districts. Developed in the late 1890s, the area continues to evolve and surprise.

Take the Lakeside area for example. Lakeside Park, financed in 1896 by tobacco and textile tycoon Maj. Lewis Ginter, helped spark what became the Richmond Region's first suburb. Today it's an eclectic mix of close-knit neighborhoods resurging with new businesses, new energy and even new street landscaping. Ginter's park is now part of Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden and the Jefferson Lakeside Country Club.
