Introducing a New Guide to Our Forests on PlantItForward.com

12-07-2007

PlantItForward.com has added a fun, educational tool to help families learn about U.S. forests by bringing the forests to their fingertips online. Many families don’t have a plush forest in their own backyard or in nearby neighborhoods. Since they may not see forests on a daily basis, many Americans may be surprised to know that since 1987, U.S. forests have increased by 12 million acres. This new tool on PlantItForward.com/Abundant is meant to show families how abundant our forests actually are and how many surprising new things there are to learn about this amazing renewable resource.

Each section of the site has information to help families explore the nation’s forests. Highlights include:

Where are the forests?

See how many forests there are and where they’re located across the country. Also, get local information about forests in your area or in areas you may be visiting. Click on each of the nine regions to explore state-by-state forest information.

Meet some family foresters

Ever wondered who owns and cares for our forests? Over half of America’s forests are privately owned by individuals or families. For some, forestry is a family tradition, with lands handed down through generations dating back to pioneer or even colonial days. For others, forest ownership is a second career that enables them to live and work in nature instead of the big city. Learn about their heritage and devotion to our forests.

Keeping forests sustainable

Every day, four million new trees are planted, more than making up for what is harvested.  Learn what you can do to Plant It ForwardSM, or take small steps to renew, reuse and respect our forests, like choosing certified sustainable products.
