Facts about the Amazon River

The Amazon is the second longest river in the world, stretching from the Peruvian Andes to the Atlantic Ocean, nearly 4,000 miles. Although it is second in length to the Nile, no other river comes close in the amount of water it carries to the Atlantic Ocean – about 20% of all of the waters flowing in the rivers of the world flows in the Amazon.

As the Amazon lies on the Equator and mostly in the rain forest areas, it controls the main flow of the water from this area. The river has 17 primary tributaries — each of which are over 1,000 miles long. In addition to its normal flow, the rainy season finds the river even wider and deeper, with the widest area measuring around 6.8 miles wide. The river system is the lifeline of the forest.

Founded in 1669 by Spanish explorers, the main city on the Amazon is Manaus. In their exploration, the Spaniards noticed fresh water 200 miles out to sea and followed it to the mouth of the river and upstream. Manaus is now a city of nearly 2 million residents and a major economic center of Northern Brazil.
