Family Friendly Activities at VHS
Now until Aug. 31, the Virginia Historical Society is offering visitors the opportunity to participate in interactive activities while they enjoy the museum’s exhibits. “August Afternoons” take place from 2-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays and consist of coloring projects, photography and artifact analysis, and exhibition scavenger hunts. New Exhibition at VMFA
Visitors to the newly-expanded Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will be treated to a new groundbreaking exhibition that highlights photography’s role in South Africa’s complex transformation. The exhibition, “Darkroom: Photography and New Media in South Africa since 1950,” will run Aug. 21 through Oct. 24, 2010. This exhibition features the work of 18 photographers, new media and video artists, who lived and worked in South Africa during the apartheid era (1948-1994). Details at vmfa.museum.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series
Racing fans will want to be front and center for Air Guard 400, a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race, Sept. 11 at Richmond International Raceway. This is the final race before the chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, making this “One Last Race To Make The Chase.” The Air Guard allows Americans to serve in the U.S. Air Force part-time, providing flexibility to live life on their terms while serving their community and country with honor and pride. Virginia War Memorial Grand Re-Opening
The Richmond Region is excited to announce the grand re-opening of the Virginia War Memorial and it’s new Paul and Phyllis Galanti Education Center Sept. 17. The new center will add 17,300 square feet and will include a theater to display the memorial’s “Virginians at War” film series, a remodeled outdoor amphitheater, new meeting space and room to make the memorial’s research library accessible to the public. 400th Anniversary of the Citie of Henricus
This Fall, visitors are invited to take part in the kick off of the 400th anniversary of the 1611 founding of the Citie of Henricus, the second English settlement after Jamestown. At Henricus Historical Park’s Publick Days Sept. 18-19, guests can celebrate the past 400 years while watching history come to life with re-enactments, military drills and musket firings, craftsmen and blacksmiths, 17th-century medicinal demonstrations, Virginia Indian activities, historical children’s games and crafts, storytelling and more. Poe Memorial Service
Make sure Edgar Allan Poe enthusiasts don’t miss Poe’s memorial service Oct. 7. This annual event, hosted by Richmond’s Poe Museum in Historic Shockoe Bottom, honors Poe’s legacy. Visitors will be able to explore the museum’s incredible collection of Poe memorabilia and enjoy the Enchanted Garden complete with a Poe Shrine constructed from the bricks and granite salvaged from the building in which Poe edited the Southern Literary Messenger.
