 Autumn fairs, festivals and seasonal events in Washington County, Ohio

 

MARIETTA, OH (August 30, 2010) – Autumn is in the air and Washington County is humming with a variety of seasonal fairs and festivals! There is a little something for everyone ranging from the nationally acclaimed Ohio River Sternwheel Festival in early September to the Moonlight & Chocolate Walk and local chili cook offs in October!

 

The annual Washington County Fair will take place September 4-7 at the Washington County Fairgrounds. Parades, pageants, crafts, demolition derby, and camping are available. Special live music by Lee Brice, Sept. 6 at 6:30 p.m. Admission is $8 per person, $5 for seniors, free for children 5 and under. Parking is $1.

 

One by one, from up river and down, the sternwheelers arrive in Marietta, Ohio, home of the American Sternwheel Association for the annual Ohio River Sternwheel Festival September 10-12, 2010. They come to The Riverboat Town to have some good ol' fashioned fun, food and music! Admission is free. Entertainment all weekend on the Ohio River levee. A special fireworks spectacular, to celebrate the Festival’s 35th anniversary, will take place Saturday, Sept. 11 from 9:30-10:00 p.m.

 

At Sweetapple Farm visitors relax...remember...smile and experience the farm! A bevy of ag-tivities are scheduled including tours on Saturdays from 10:00 a.m. to dusk and Sundays from Noon to dusk,  September 11 – November 7. Hayrides, corn maze and more are scheduled!

 

The Barlow Fair, started in 1871, is the oldest independent agricultural fair in Ohio. The Fair is slated for September 24-26 from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. daily. The Barlow Fairgrounds are located at the crossroads of Ohio 339 and Ohio 550. With its pristine white barns, red roofs and Mill Branch covered bridge (circa 1832), the event is also the last fair in Washington County each fall and is best known for its horse shows and tractor pulls.

 

Historic Marietta and the Muskingum River Water Trail provide a challenging course for the First City Triathlon – September 26.  Run, road bike and canoe or kayak! The event is open to individuals and teams. All participants must provide their own equipment. Race registration takes place at the Marietta College Boat House on Gilman Avenue beginning at 8:00 a.m. – beginners and experts are encouraged to register!

 

Can you smell the delicious scent of apple butter? Yum! The annual Apple Butter Stir-Off Festival

takes place October 2-3 (Saturday 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m.; Sunday Noon- 5:00 p.m.) at Howes Grove Park in Belpre, Ohio. Money raised at the event will be used for local projects, such as purchasing glasses for people who cannot afford them and helping with youth organizations.

 

Sprechen Sie Deutsch? Well, even if you do not speak German you will want to attend the Lowell Octoberfest the first weekend in October from 11:00 a.m.-6:00 p.m. on Buell Island in Lowell, Ohio.

The cost is free to attend. Enjoy delicious homemade food, brows through the flea market and crafts, and enjoying live entertainment.

 

Marietta's historic shopping district brings together two great loves - chocolate and shopping- during the Annual Moonlight & Chocolate Walk on October 8. Dozens of participating restaurants and merchants will create special chocolate favors, refreshments and other items relating to the evening for ticket holders from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. Cost: $15 per person; $25 per couple.

 

The Farmers Castle Museum Education Center at 509 Ridge Street in Belpre, Ohio, will host Heritage Day 2010 October 17 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Step back in time…heritage skills and demonstrations will take place including spinning, rug weaving, soap making and blacksmithing. The Exhibit Barn will feature Sorghum and Cider presses and a 1923 Canoe.
