WHAT'S NEW

First Nations' Salish Welcome Figure complete - blessing at top of Whistler Mountain slated for September 2

Master carver Xwalacktun (Rick Harry) has hand-carved a Salish Welcome Figure that is currently being moved into position near the PEAK 2 PEAK Gondola station. Its location is of significance, as a culmination of the new Cultural Journey Sea to Sky stretching along the newly improved Highway 99 between Vancouver and Whistler. An official blessing takes place at the top of Whistler Mountain (adjacent to the Roundhouse) on Thursday, September 2 at 11:00 am (upload between 10:00-10:30am, valid lift ticket required). The Salish Welcome Figure becomes a permanent fixture in the alpine to be appreciated by sightseers, hikers, skiers and boarders for years to come. The carving is a joint effort by the Whistler Blackcomb Foundation and the Squamish Lil'wat Cultural Centre to increase the profile of Aboriginal Tourism in the region. slcc.ca/explore/featured-exhibits

Starting at 7 a.m., participants will ride in a dedicated lane climbing a total of more than 2,400 vertical metres along the route which stretches from sea level in Vancouver to Whistler Village at an elevation of 675 metres. Celebrations and awards will follow at the finish line in Whistler Village. rbcgranfondowhistler.com
