Welcome to Tourism Whistler's media newsletter, featuring information on what's new and noteworthy, upcoming events as well as quirky and interesting Whistler story ideas.

October 2010

Just as another stellar summer season wraps up in Whistler, the resort is buzzing with anticipation for the upcoming winter. In addition to many ongoing events and activities, October finds us welcoming the annual Turkey Sale & Swap - a highlight of the pre-winter season, the Wishes Whistler Wedding & Event Show and the Whistler Readers and Writers' Festival.

Public ride program at Whistler Sliding Centre
Located on Blackcomb Mountain, this venue played host to the bobsleigh, luge and skeleton events during the 2010 Winter Games and will be used for athlete training, competitions, and public recreation.  A new public ride program, launching in December 2010, allows guest to enjoy a piloted four- man bobsleigh experience ($200 Cdn) and a solo skeleton experience  ($120 Cdn) down the fastest, most technical course in the world ...don't worry, visitors have a special starting gate lower down the course! Each experience will take approximately 2.5 hours (including instruction and a tour of Guest Services displays). Sliding times are scheduled for the late afternoon, so it's the perfect complement to a day on the slopes!

Whistler Athletes' Centre
The new Whistler Athletes' Centre includes the Athletes' Lodge and High Performance Training Centre.  Available for athletes/ coaches and members of educational, arts and culture organizations, the facilities feature state-of-the-art strength and conditioning resources and 194 beds. The Whistler Athletes' Centre is located on the south end of Whistler in Cheakamus Crossing - the resort's newest neighbourhood which served as the Whistler Athletes' Village during the 2010 Winter Games.

Improvements to terrain parks
Whistler is gearing up for winter 2010/ 2011 with new developments in the terrain parks. Whistler Blackcomb's Nintendo Terrain Parks crew is adding an Olympic-sized superpipe to the already adrenalin-pumping mix of park options. Crews are widening and straightening the superpipe's fall-line for better riding and to accommodate the 22-foot Global Pipe Cutter. In addition, Whistler Blackcomb has partnered with Arena Snowparks for rail fleet production and the 150-foot mini pipe returns to Blackcomb. Improvements are also being made to the Nintendo Terrain Park on Whistler Mountain. Preparations began in early September.
