PRESS RELEASE

Stillwater Harvest Fest Breaks World Record for Largest Pumpkin
Pumpkin Heads to New York for National TV Appearances and Carving

Stillwater, MN - A new world record was set for the world’s heaviest pumpkin during the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off at Stillwater’s Harvest Fest Oct 9. Chris Stevens of New Richmond, WI, won the contest with a pumpkin weighing 1,810.5 pounds, shattering the previous world record set in 2009 in Ohio by 85 pounds.

Stevens and the great pumpkin are headed to New York where they will appear on Live with Regis & Kelly on Thursday, Oct 21. Other appearances and interviews are also possible. The pumpkin will then be taken to the Botanical Gardens where it will be carved by master carver Scott Cully of Eugene, Oregon. It will be on display through the end of the month.

Stevens, a 32-year old contractor who lives on 4.5 acres with a 10,000 sq ft pumpkin patch, said the secret to growing the giant pumpkin is a mix of sunshine, rain, cow manure, fish emulsion and seaweed. Contest organizers said that the combination of hot weather and lots of rain this summer resulted in the best pumpkin growing season ever.

Stillwater’s Annual Harvest Fest takes place the second Saturday in October. In addition to the Giant Pumpkin Weigh-off, the day-long festival includes a pumpkin boat regatta, chili cook-off, pumpkin baking contest, pumpkin decorating contest, local beer and wine tasting, live music, haunted caves tours and trolley, gondola and pedi cab rides. Kids can enjoy the pedal tractor pull, face painting, mini pumpkin decorating and coloring contests, a kids’ costume parade and trick-or-treating along Main Street. The event culminates with the judging and awards ceremony followed by a giant pumpkin drop.

The Stillwater Harvest Fest is sponsored by the Stillwater Convention and Visitors Bureau and the Main Street Independent Business Alliance. For more information on the Harvest Fest, visit  www.discoverstillwater.com and click on the Harvest Fest link.
