Tourism Whistler and NBC San Francisco bring Whistler to the Bay Area

Whistler, B.C. - More than 1,600 kilometres from the base of Whistler and Blackcomb mountains, Whistler Resort is now front and centre to thousands of U.S. residents living in the San Francisco Bay area.

Whistler, in all its glory, is being brought into the homes of Bay Area residents thanks to a broadcasting partnership between Tourism Whistler, Vancouver Coast and Mountains Tourism Region, NBC and tours.com.

Whistler is featured in a 30-minute program broadcast on NBC San Francisco, on five different air dates over two months. The segment is called NBC - Whistler's Alpine Adventures.

"This is a significant win for Whistler," said Tourism Whistler Vice President of Marketing, Arlene Schieven. "The project is an excellent example of how we're working to leverage our strong partnerships in order to enhance awareness of Whistler as a year-round destination of choice." she said. "The San Francisco Bay Area represents one of our key markets - and this program brings Whistler into the living rooms of more than 500,000 potential visitors."

The program runs Saturdays and Sundays on NBC Bay Area. In addition, there will be 10 two-minute weekend segments integrated into NBC Sports programming and 50 thirty-second promos to run during NBC Programming Monday through Sunday.

The format sees host David Mulligan bringing viewers along vicariously to Whistler via segments featuring a variety of Whistler activities. Mulligan hosts the interview directly from the NBC studio, telling Whistler stories with the help of Chili Thom, Whistler artist, adventurer, DJ, filmmaker and man-about-town. Tourism Whistler collaborated with NBC on the script for the show, which opens with Tourism Whistler video footage and features Chili Thom profiling Whistler activities and discussing all that the resort has to offer. It's a talk-show format which integrates Whistler stories with exclusive travel deals for NBC viewers.

The first broadcast, on November 20, featured Mulligan and Thom talking about Whistler's welcoming and celebratory nature, its historic path toward becoming Host Mountain Resort for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and the Olympic legacies such as the Whistler Olympic Park and the Whistler Sliding Centre. The show aired prior to the 2001 American Ski Classic, reaching 35,000 households.

Subsequent broadcasts, which aired on November 27 and December 4, highlighted stunning winter imagery of the mountains and activities including horse-drawn sleigh rides, dogsledding, backcountry tours, ziplining, heli-skiing and boarding as well as an introduction to summer activities such as mountain biking, canoeing and golfing. The schedule was chosen to maximize exposure with the November episode following college football (and reaching 40,000 households) and the December episode following the Golf World Challenge (and reaching 43,000 households).

Part four promises "something for everyone - any time of the year" and explores the endless options for summer sightseeing, the Peak2Peak, the adventure zone at the base of Blackcomb Mountain, mountain biking and golf. The clip also features the pedestrian-friendly village, the vast array of shopping and dining options, the Valley Trail, water sports and events such as Kokanee Crankworx. This broadcast airs December 5 following the NFL showdown between the Pittsburg Steelers and Baltimore Ravens - with an audience reach of approximately 500,000 households.

The final show will air on December 18 at 3 p.m. following the NBC Sports special: Iron Man World Championships, reaching 53,000 households.

Clips of the program can be viewed
