Welcome to the Thailand Tourism e-Newsletter – your guide to the latest news and information from Thailand!

FROM THE DIRECTOR

As we enter 2008, the future looks bright for Thailand. Following the general elections on December 23, Bangkok will be celebrating with great optimism on New Year’s Eve.

This year FutureBrand’s Country Brand Index ranked Thailand above all other countries in the ‘Value for Money’ category. The Publication described Thailand as “one of the most affordable destinations in the world, with an authentic culture, excellent beaches and world-class nightlife. Thailand proves the most for your money.”

While prices remain low, the Country’s culture and natural environment are not compromised. Many Thai businesses demonstrate that environmental protection and respect for traditional society are compatible with successful commerce. Because of this effort, the Thailand Tourism Awards were created to recognize commitment to cultural and environmental conservation by communities and businesses. I encourage future visitors to learn more about these remarkable hotels and resorts, as well as our other exciting changes by visiting www.tourismthailand.org

New Year’s Festival

To welcome the arrival of the New Year, the largest public celebration will occur at Central World Square. Several hundred thousand party-goers are expected to attend the impressive light show and music concert. There, visitors can enjoy the countdown with other countries around the world via satellite and projected on stage screens.

A more traditional countdown takes place at Sanam Luang near the Grand Palace. Geared towards an mature generation, these celebrations will have a traditional and cultural theme. The entertainment program includes performances by several respected Thai musicians and classical Thai dance troupes. The Governor of Bangkok normally delivers a speech, and several religious leaders bless the year that lies ahead.
