Once a month the Kansas Travel & Tourism Division distributes this brief newsletter, providing tourism updates from throughout the state of Kansas.  Highlights include a title, brief descriptor and a link for more details.   Not all highlights will be of interest to everyone.  They are simply intended to entice new story ideas in the areas of agritourism, outdoor, culinary, cultural, history, heritage and more.

 

 

Quilters and Quilt Lovers Celebrate the 150th Anniversa! ry of the Statehood of Kansas:  From July 3 to August 14, 2011, the Stauth Museum in Montezuma, KS will celebrate the rich history of Kansas through handmade quilts from many decades depicting the talent, determination and resourcefulness of the woman of Kansas.  Different styles, different techniques and different influences will be represented.  The Stauth Museum will attempt to display one quilt representing each of the 105 counties of Kansas to celebrate the 150th Birthday of Kansas.  For more information contact Kim Legleiter, stauthm@ucom.net.

 

The Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks’ (KDWP) Adds Additional Workshop for Becoming an Outdoors-Woman (BOW):  Kansas has earned its reputation as a premier hunting destination, and women interested in hunting and the great outd! oors are a growing demographic.  KDWP will offer a second BOW spring workshop to complement the traditional fall workshop, May 13-15, 2011 near Junction City, KS.  The program is designed to provide women a chance to learn about hunting, fishing, and other outdoor recreation in a friendly, supportive environment. During the three-day workshop, volunteer instructors teach participants a variety of skills, including fishing, wing shooting, camping, orienteering, rifle marksmanship, botany, dog handling, archery, and more. Trails to Adventure Commemorate Kansas’ 150th Birthday:  Whether you’re interested in the Old West, the C! ivil War, pioneers or ethnic history, visitors to Kansas can enjoy all four themes on different “Trails to Adventure” this year.  For example, on the “Cowboy Trail,” the hoof beats of cowboys riding the wide prairies still echo in legendary cow towns and at working ranches that also welcome guests.  Along the “Heritage Trail,” visitors will experience a rich ethnic character including communities abounding with Swedish, Czech and German culture.  To see more details on these historic trails visit http://www.travelks.com/s/index.cfm?aid=577.
