Winter in Maine

By Judi Janofsky & Rich Steck

The Fall may be a peak tourist season in Maine for foliage watchers, but it’s the winter when tourists are few and prices are low that’s an attractive time to visit.

For the best views, take the coastal roads and drive through the picturesque harbor towns. The weather is milder and the sights are wonderful. Here is just one of the many routes you could take:

Start along Mid-Coast Maine on Route 1 in one of the state's prettiest villages, Wiscasset. Then take Route 27 to Boothbay Harbor where you can check out the shops and harbor. Back on U.S. 1, head north to "The Jewel of the Maine Coast" - Rockport, Camden and Lincolnville. Start with the quaint town of Rockport with its historic buildings and State Of Maine Cheese Company famous for its local Cheddar and Jack cheeses.

From Rockport, head up Route 1 to Camden, with its picturesque harbor, upscale shops and waterfront dining. Stop for lunch at the Bayview and try the Deluxe Lobster Roll with huge chunks of tender lobster on a toasty hoagie roll.

Spend the night in one of the town’s many bed & breakfasts with fireplaces. One of our favorites is the Norumbega (www.norumbegainn.com).

From Camden, head north from town until you reach Mt. Battie Auto Road in Camden Hills State Park. Park the car on top and climb the tower for a rewarding 180-degree view of the bay dotted by several small islands, the harbor towns along the coast and the mountains behind.

Back on Route 1 going north, pass through Lincolnville, Belfast and other picturesque villages and towns as you head for Mount Desert island, home of Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor. Spend at least two nights in town. The new Bay Harbor Grand Hotel on Main Street is open year round and the prices are half their summer rates.

Enjoy the trip.
