Yogis gather in Whistler for second annual conference



Whistler, B.C. – The largest number of yogis ever assembled at one time in Whistler will gather in the resort to learn, inspire and teach.

The Whistler Yoga Conference will be the largest-ever gathering of yogis in Whistler, raising the resort’s profile as an internationally renowned wellness destination and bringing together more than 20 instructors and 200 practitioners – all with a common goal of improving the delivery of yoga in North America.

The yogis will gather at the 2011 Whistler Yoga Conference which features about 40 seminars, workshops and classes May 6-8 at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler Resort. The focus of the conference is to create a supportive gathering place for students, practitioners and teachers who wish to grow and expand their yoga vision for the benefit of all.

The conference opens each day with mediation and offers a classes and workshops in a number of varying yoga styles as well as chakra balancing, Qi Gong, sacred dance, meditation and aromatherapy.

Yoga students and teachers of all abilities are welcome to attend the conference. Guest instructors include Hemalayaa, originally from Toronto and now living in Los Angeles and featured on the Ellen DeGeneres Show, Dashama Konahan internationally-known teacher, author and lifestyle coach, Shane Perkins of Yandara Yoga from Baja California, Yogi Vishva and Shahar Rabi and Saskia Tait from New Earth Institute. Local practitioners include Whistler yoga pioneer and long-time instructor Leslie Young, Kristin Campbell, of Neo Alpine Yoga, Tina James and Tanya Di Valentino of Loka Yoga, Colleen Felgate of Solarice and Kashi Richardson.

Workshops are offered to students and teachers and feature a variety of offerings at different levels.

Awakening inner Power with Pranayama – explores diverse pranayama practice for physical, emotional and spiritual wellbeing, focusing on the theory of the five pranas and how it relates to yoga practice.

Opening the Inner Temple – focuses on the chakra system and teaches how to balance the archetypal elements of earth, water, fire, air, sound, light and thought.

Whistler Style: A soul-full snowboarder’s guide to bliss in the mountains – delves into practices of mindfulness and moment-to-moment awareness with Tanya Di Valentino, exploring three points of yoga for mindful riding and five points of yoga for tuning your gear (body). This workshop is appropriate for all levels.

Make Peace on Your Mat and Inspire Peace in the World – local yoga instructor Kristin Campbell will lead a session using Vinyasa Flow Yoga.

Additional workshops include The Yoga of Relationships, Aromatic Alchemy and Soma Yoga, Fire of Transformation – Embracing Your Edge, Rhythm and Repetition. Some of the other options to explore include the inversion party, grounding and manifestation, detox yoga flow, the three stations of love, sacred dance and yoga, angels and arm balances, and discovering harmony with the sounds of bees.

 The conference also incorporates other elements into its schedule. Glenn Iles offers a seminar on electronic marketing for yoga practitioners, Hemalayaa provides entertainment and lessons in Bollywood dancing and Will Blunderfield provides an evening of Kirtan. On Mother’s Day, enjoy the Jai Ma! Mother’s Day Yoga with several teachers and live music. This event will benefit the Kelty Patrick Dennehy Foundation. 
At this year’s conference, the Foundation will award a $1,000 scholarship in the name of Riley Dennehy. The recipient will also receive a full conference pass to the 2012 Whistler Yoga Conference and the opportunity to be a guest instructor at the 2012 conference.
