Press Release: Destination Germany 2012 - Luxurious, Affordable and Down to Business

Business Travel, Delicious Wines Paired with Auspicious Cultural Events is a Winning Combination in Germany in 2012.

A trip to Germany in 2012 entails exciting events and brand new openings and delicious wines seldom tasted outside of the destination. Visitors planning their itineraries can coordinate a visit to Potsdam for the celebration of 300 Years of Frederick the Great with a trip to Leipzig to hear concerts for the 800 Years of the St. Thomas Boys’ Choir and an excursion to Nuremberg for a rare Duerer Exhibit.

A few more days will bring one to Kassel for the Documenta13 and to Hamburg for the opening of the Elbe Philharmonic. Dresden will showcase its newly re-opened Military Museum by Daniel Liebeskind and the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport will deliver yet another boost to this region’s tourism. The combination of these metropolitan and cultural highlights with the celebration of Germany’s 13 wine producing regions is accessible for every budget level and will satisfy every culture vulture’s appetite.

The German National Tourist Office (GNTO) joins forces with the German Wine Institute (DWI) to present the 13 wine growing regions with their diverse cultures and traditions. The theme year not only targets enjoying German wine but also travel within in and around the vineyards especially for affordable prices.

The 800th Anniversary of the THOMANA, the triad of St. Thomas Boys Choir, St. Thomas Church and St. Thomas School is a year long celebration with an extensive program of events and concerts. Rich in tradition, THOMANA has left its mark on Leipzig and its inhabitants - and continues to do so today.www.thomana2012.com

The Documenta13 is a prestigious arts event which takes place every five years in Kassel. The exhibition of modern and contemporary art draws attention from all over the world. The Documenta13 is being planned by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, with a number of curatorial agents, advisors, and artists. www.d13.documenta.de

To mark his 300th birthday in 2012, Frederick's personality and world views are presented at his most magnificent palace building, the New Palace, as well as at selected locations in Sanssouci Park in Potsdam. Frederick II, known also as "the Great," is one of the most multifaceted figures in European history. FRIEDERISIKO (Frederick's Risk) is the leitmotif of a major exhibition shown at his personal and historic original settings. www.spsg.de

The largest Albrecht Duerer Exhibition held in Germany in the past 40 years takes place in Nuremberg as the birthplace of this most important German artist. The exhibition will focus on his early work. The Germanisches Nationalmuseum (the largest museum of German Art and Culture) will present more than 120 objects focusing on five major themes. www.der-fruehe-duerer.de

Next year also marks "500 years of The Sistine Madonna" in Dresden. Exactly five hundred years ago Raphael, the great master painter of the Renaissance, was commissioned by Pope Julius II to paint the Sistine Madonna. Today, it is one of the most famous works of art in the world. It belongs to the Gemaeldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden and especially for this popular altarpiece, the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden will be holding a major anniversary exhibition. www.skd.museum

A special highlight in 2012 will be Hamburg’s new Elbphilharmonie. The music hall is going to resemble the perfect relation of architecture and music, a fantastic site on top of an old ware house within the historic port of the city Hamburg. The Elbphilharmonie will give the maritime city a distinctive profile on its way to becoming a musical metropolis. The opening is scheduled for May 2012.www.elbphilharmonie.de

Last but not least, Destination Germany will be focusing in 2012 on another important constituent: the business traveler. An increase of 12 percent in the business travel segment of tourism in Germany provides the foundation for this focus. Approximately 27 percent (2009) of the U.S. travelers go to Germany for business.

Germany has now for seven years been the No. 2 destination worldwide for conferences. Two out of three leading trade fairs are held in Germany. More than 6,000 venues ranging from modern congress halls, highly professional hotels to extraordinary event locations are available for conventions, meetings and events. And because the environmental impact of these events is becoming increasingly important - 2012 will be all about Green meetings in Germany. Germany offers low-emission travel, sustainably managed convention centers and hotels, and green hospitality programs just to name a few. www.germany.travel
