The official City of Detroit Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 18 at the internationally-acclaimed Campus Martius Park. Continuing what the Detroit Free Press has called a “Great New Detroit Family Tradition,” the tree will be lit at approximately 8 PM amid the spectacular 8th Annual “Winter Magic” Celebration at Campus Martius Park.

The Tree Lighting festivities begin at 6:30 PM, with entertainment, live music (11 vocal performances), ice-skating shows featuring the Arctic Figure Skating Club and Detroit Skating Club, and other seasonal family activities including the Red Kettle Bounce House, photos with Santa, and carriage rides.

Among the confirmed featured performances this year are: Larry Callahan & Selected of God, the Michigan Opera Theatre Children’s Chorus, the high energy Detroit band Nightline, the Michigan Philharmonic Brass Ensemble, and The Salvation Army Brass Band. New this year, the “Christmas WonderFest” at neighboring Cadillac Square (5-9 PM) creates a unique holiday shopping experience, with specialty gifts, decorations and fun for the whole family.

The tree is a 60-foot Norway Spruce that weighs over 16,000 pounds, has a 38-foot span of branches and will be decorated with over 18,000 lights on over three miles of wire.  It will take more than a week to light and decorate the tree in preparation of the Nov. 18 Tree Lighting Ceremony.  For more information, contact Detroit 300 Conservancy at (313) 962-0101 or visit www.campusmartiuspark.org.
