Season's Greetings From The Okavango Delta

I’m a big fan of the traditional Christmas, but my most memorable ones have been spent without a fir tree in sight.

Botswana’s Okavango region is stunning at this time of year: the seasonal rains are filling the flood plains and waterways. Visitors fly in to a desert airstrip and then drive to a vast oasis of date palms, acacia, mangosteen and ebony trees. And it’s rich with all kinds of wildlife.

On clear nights, the sky is thick with stars, and you’re immersed in an extraordinary soundscape: lions calling, hyenas, elephants moving through the water, and perhaps a buffalo or two bumping up against the posts of your tented camp.

One New Year’s Eve, we had a dinner at a spot overlooking the flood plains in the delta. I turned around and shone my torch on three young male lions stalking a zebra behind a stand of palm trees. They weren’t more than thirty meters away from me.
