Kentucky's Most Famous Scenic Byway
Our Scenic Byways stories roll into Kentucky this issue, a state where there are about as many scenic/historic highways as there are counties. (Which is a lot!). A fascinating National Scenic Byway in the heart of the bluegrass state is the Lincoln Heritage Scenic Highway, which chauffeurs motorists through the "soul" of the state's Presidential, Civil War, religious and bourbon producing heritage. If you're travelling to or fro Mammoth Cave National Park from the east, or if you just want to take a very cool day trip from the Park, the Lincoln Heritage Highway is a must do. Not only will you enjoy eye-popping pastoral beauty along the route but you get to see famous sites including Abraham Lincoln's Historic Birthplace in Hodgenville, Lincoln'sBoyhood Home Historic site, the Abbey of Gethsemani (the country's oldest Travist Monk abbey), quaint Bardstownwith it's interesting downtown Village and Bourbon Heritage Center,Loretto Motherhouse, and Perryville Battlefield State Park, the site of the1862 Civil War "Battle of Kentucky."Another beautiful rural route that is nearMammoth Cave Hotel is the Duncan Hines Scenic Road. Bet you didn't know the king of cakes was born in Bowling Green, KY? The route officially begins at Mr. Hines' former home (now a mortuary) in Bowling Green and meanders through quaint Brownsville, KY and lyrically named towns like Sunfish and Bee Spring, passed the southern tip of Nolin Lake and then down into Mammoth Cave National Park after crossing the Green River via ferry boat(which can be lots of fun for the kids!) Follow the road south through the Park and head towards Smiths Grove (dotted with churches and historic homes) before heading west again to complete the circle tour in Bowling Green.

Great Big Lake Superior

We talked about Big Bend National Park recently, one of the largest National Parks in the continental United States. Well, Michigan's Isle Royale National Park is one of the smallest and is another completely unique location in the Forever Resorts North American Portfolio we'd like to introduce you to.

Rock Harbor Lodge is only open during summer months and is the only full service Lodging available in the Park—so advance planning is advised, especially since this wilderness paradise can only be reached by sea plane or boat. No cars or motorized vehicles are allowed on the islands, so you're engulfed by the Park's serenity from the minute you arrive. Guests disembark at either Rock Harbor or Windigo, often depending on whether they came from Houghton (via Ranger III), Copper Harbor (via Isle Royale Queen IV) or Grand Portage, MN (via Voyager II and Sea Hunter). New this year at Windigo—not seen for over 40 years—are [Back to Press Releases Main]
