Shasta/Trinity National Forest: Eye-popping Beautiful Byways
While any road in this amazing wilderness area would qualify as "scenic, Forever Resorts (FR) would like to introduce you to two considered stellar.Highway 299 West (Eureka Way) from Redding to Eureka California (144 miles) takes you straight throughWhiskeytown National Recreation Areaand directly over one of the arms ofWhiskeytown Lake. Less than 10 miles outside of Redding you'll come to the Lake's Visitor Center on Kennedy Memorial Drive. Here you can learn about this historic area and the NRA's dam-created lakes that provide unparalleled regional recreational activities as well as water to the Sacramento Valley. You might even want to take a Ranger tour? No need to rush through the dense evergreen forests; stay with us at Oak Bottom Campgroundand pan for gold in the area or go swimming, fishing, or kayaking. If, however, you continue westward you enter Shasta-Trinity National Forest with it's own unique high-altitude characteristics, scenery and wildlife. Climb 7,300 ft. to the top of Little Mount Hoffman and breathe in the view. Watch for the historic Lookout at the top. It's cool. Built in the 1920's it's eligible for a nod from the National Register of Historic Places.

With all the opportunity to recreate, it's hard to know what paths to take. Road trippers watch for Hwy 3 nearWeaverville, going north. You'll "trail head" another stunning California Scenic Byway here. You must stroll around historic Weaverville—which IS on the National Register of Historic Places! It's been called a "gem" of a town and that's no lie. Main Street is priceless. Trinity Lake Blvd/Hwy 3 from here-on is ethereal. You're driving along the expansive Trinity River, framed by theTrinity Alps in the background. Forever Resorts invites you to vacation right here, on Hwy 3. Both on Trinity Lake, FR offers Pinewood Cove (cabins, RV and camping facilities, perfect for families and adventurists) and Trinity Lake Resorts and Marina, offering an extraordinary experience on Trinity Lake via a houseboat. (It's a fully-outfitted comfortable houseboat & sleeps 12! Trinity is less crowded than Shasta, too.) There are cabins, a restaurant and a lounge as well, so at least stop for lunch or dinner. Continue on if you must, you won't be disappointed. There's several ways to access the Lake as you drift northward in the shadow of the Alps toward Yreka where you'll connect with HWY 5 and can head back south to Redding.
