Guide for historic village of Rockford, N.C. now only a click away

08-13-2012

ROCKFORD, N.C. - A guide for enjoying a weekend in the historic Village of Rockford is now only a click away.

Surry County has created a guide and itinerary that combines Rockford's rich history with winery visits and a paddling excursion on the Yadkin River. It can be downloaded for free at the county's tourism website, VerySurry.com.

Titled a "Weekend Along Historic Rockford Road," the itinerary includes a visit to the 200-year-old Rockford General Store, a stroll through historic buildings, viewing the "Come Unto Me" fresco in the old Rockford Methodist Church, and a stop on NC's Civil War Trail.

Rockford, established in 1789 and placed on the National Register of Historic Districts in 1976, provides a glimpse into life more than two centuries ago. It was once the county seat and a thriving community. One of its most famous residents was a young lawyer - Andrew Jackson - who went on to become the seventh President of the United States.

The itinerary blends Rockford's past with its future by visiting four key wineries in the Yadkin Valley wine country: Stony Knoll, Hutton, RagApple Lassie and Sanders Ridge.

Also on tap is a half day or full day on the Yadkin River with Yadkin River Adventures, a riverside outfitter located the heart of Rockford.

Suggested evening accommodations are available at the cozy Rockford Inn Bed and Breakfast, an 1848 Antebellum house. The Rockford Inn, situated on the crest of six rolling acres, was awarded TripAdvisor's Certificate of Excellence for 2012.

"This is a wonderful village that really has been preserved in time. There are stories connected with each of the buildings," said Tammy Johnson of the Surry County Tourism Development Authority. "We want to share this little corner of the world."
